Condition: I was wondering if the hole at the top where the spring is should maybe have a screw however there is no thread in the hole or at the end of the hole so I am guessing the hole is a design feature

We believe this to be 1st Royal Dragoons 105, Captured Eagle cap badge from WWI. We are new to badges so only have limited knowledge at present.
